SONIC-GCA study

The Sonographic Assessment of the Optic Nerve Sheath in Giant Cell Arteritis (SONIC-GCA) study is an observational clinical trial designed to evaluate the use of optic nerve sheath ultrasound (ONSU) as a diagnostic and monitoring tool for Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA). GCA is a serious inflammatory condition that affects the blood vessels, particularly those in the head and neck, and can lead to vision loss if not promptly treated.

Objectives

The goal of the SONIC-GCA study is to find out if a simple, non-invasive eye ultrasound can help doctors more easily diagnose and monitor Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA), which can cause vision loss. This exam is not dangerous, and takes less than 2 minutes to complete. By measuring the size of the optic nerve sheath behind the eye, researchers hope to see if this test can detect signs of GCA early and track how well treatment is working over time.
