The SONIC-GCA Study
Sonographic Assessment of the Optic Nerve Sheath in Giant Cell Arteritis

Design and Objective
SONIC-GCA is a Canadian, multicenter, diagnostic study led by Dr Makhzoum (Montreal). It will evaluate the diagnostic and monitoring performance of optic nerve sheath ultrasound in patients with suspected Giant Cell Arteritis. The goal of the SONIC-GCA study is to find out if a simple, non-invasive eye ultrasound can help doctors more easily diagnose and monitor Giant Cell Arteritis, which is a medical emergency.
What is Optic Nerve Sheath Ultrasound ?
This exam is not dangerous, and takes less than 2 minutes to complete. By measuring the size of the optic nerve sheath behind the eye, researchers hope to see if this test can detect signs of GCA early and track how well treatment is working over time.

Who is eligible ?
All patients referred for suspected new-onset giant cell arteritis to our specialized clinic are considered for eligibility. Those diagnosed with GCA will be followed for 2 years.
What can this study help patients ?
SONIC-GCA can help patients by providing a faster, safe, painless way to detect inflammation from giant cell arteritis, allowing earlier treatment and reducing the risk of complications.
